Art in Public #1 Bayside Park Chula Vista

Note: Due to construction activities in the area, street parking is limited and park permits for Bayside Park are unavailable at this time.

Bayside Park features a fishing pier perfect for a lazy afternoon, surrounded by marinas and restaurants. The park also provides an inspiring view of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge and the San Diego urban skyline. Amenities include wide shared walkway and bike path that is part of the 24 mile long Bayshore bikeway, a playground for children, volleyball court and seating  along the shoreline.

The Fisherman is a sculpture of a great egret, created by Stephen Fairfield, 2006 constructed of 13′ high X 16′ long X 5′ wide welded steel Giant Egret

The Fisherman sculpture is located on the south end of Bayside Park behind the restrooms and east of the fishing Pier. The Bayside Park Pier 

 

This is San Diego Synergy, by Kent Kraber, 2007. This stainless steel sculpture depicts the wildlife around San Diego shoreline. Different varieties of seabirds and fish mesh with sailboats and fluid shapes of wind and water.

Walking north along the Bayview Bike Path you come across a series tall poles. Looking at older images of the area it seems to be a kinetic art installation from 2004 by artist George Peters and Melanie Walker. Atop of each pole should be a wind vane like structure but those have been removed. Unknown if the sculpture "Wind Oars" will be reassembled or removed after construction of the Gaylord Property scene in the background.

Imperial Beach Sun and Fun Festival 2024

 

 

On Saturday August 17, 2024 the Sun & Sea Festival returned to Imperial Beach after a few year absence. 

Next to Pier Plaza volunteers constructed the largest sand castle on Imperial Beach. Over 80 cubic yards of sand was trucked in for the festival. Over 2 days volunteers used shovels and hand tools to remove and sculpt the sand into a retro themed 80s "Back 2IB" sand castle. 

 

The NAT, San Diego's Natural History Museum in Balboa Park

 

 

The San Diego Natural History Museum, often fondly referred to as "The NAT" by locals, is one the most popular sights in Balboa Park. The Nat has a vast growing collection of over 8 million specimens that catalogs the evolution and diversity of Southern California and the Baja California Peninsula. The Nat has five floors,  each with its own unique focus. I recommend taking the elevator to the top floor and then using the staircase to make your way down back to the ground floor. 

There is so much to see and do at the Nat including a newly opened nature trail, a movie theater, and a living lab that you should at least set aside 2 hours when visiting.

San Diego Maritime Museum

The West Coast's oldest maritime Museum, and the only one entirely afloat, is mored in the northern part of San Diego Bay along the "Embarcadero Waterfront"  (Spanish for the verb embarcar, meaning "to embark"). The museums collections of Sail and Powered boats have been part of San Diego's Skyline for years. The largest and most prominent vessel is the "Star of India." Built in 1863, this 277 foot long, 1200 ton sailing vessel circumnavigate the globe more than 21 times over its 60 years in service. The Star of India is also the fourth oldest ship afloat in the United States, after the 1797 USS Constitution (Boston, Mass), the 1841 Charles W. Morgan (Mystic, Conn.) and the 1854 USS Constellation (Baltimore, MD)

"Handstand" Public Art by Actor/Artitst Daniel Stern Coronado Island

 

The bronze statue "Handstand" was created in 2010 by actor and artist Daniel Stern. The statue stands 8 feet and features a man in a suit and hat stand on one hand. The sculpture was installed at the Coronado Community Center in 2012. 

The artist Daniel Stern is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the Marvel Urchins as one of the bumbling burglars in the first two title of the Home Alone series. 

Sea Lavender Del Mar Overlook

 

Blooming Sea Lavender on top of a bluff overlooking the northerns stretch of Torrey Pines State Beach. You can find metered parking on the south bound lanes of Camino Del Mar Road. 

Sea Lavender, also know as marsh rosemary and lavender thrift, is a perennial coastal plant that can be often found  growing in both salt marshes and along coastal sand dunes. Despite its name, it is not actually related to the lavender plant. The plant creates leathery, spoon-shaped leaves, red-tinted stems, and delicate purple blooms that appear in summer. These plants are easily recognizable as a result of their dense, cloud-like spreads of tiny, paper-like lavender flowers. 

Xavier The X-Man's® Cruise for the Cause 2024

The 22nd year of Xavier The X-Man's® Cruise for the Cause, an annual FUNdraiser car show to benefit the Emilio Nares Foundation, a local non-profit organization that provides free transportation services to help children battling cancer and their families. Took place over the weekend in Chula Vista, California. Over 400 cars showed up for the event held at the Otay Ranch Town Center on Sunday. Live entertainment, vendor booths and activities for the kids.

San Diego Air & Space Museum Balboa Park

 

 

The San Diego Air & Space Museum is open daily 10am to 4:30pm

For current pricing and exhibitions checkout their website. If you already have been to the Balboa Park Museum check out their secondary location at Gillespie Field in El Cajon for more aircraft and artifacts. 

The original museum opened up to the public in 1963 but a fire in 1978 caused the loss of the entire collection. The museum would reopen two years later in 1980 in its current home in the former Ford building in the southwest corner of Balboa Park. 

Plan on about 1hr to 2 hrs to enjoy the museum.
